Co-Curricular
At Joyce Frankland Academy, Newport, our Co-Curriculum provision provides students with a varied and exciting range of activities and breadth to their educational experience. Our Co-Curricular programme enables students to challenge themselves to achieve success by complementing their academic studies.
We are proud of the provision we offer and expect all of our students to take an active part in Co-Curricular life. We provide fantastic opportunities for students in our nationally competitive sports teams, our superb music and drama performances and our very successful Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. These opportunities are under-pinned by a wide range of extra-curricular clubs covering everything from rocket making in science club to gardening skills in the eco garden.
The Academy has excellent links with a range of global partners which enable us to provide expeditions and trips to places such as Peru and India, as well as ski trips to the Alps and a sports tour to South Africa. We also are part of an Erasmus exchange project with students experiencing, life, work and study in many different European countries. In addition, we have established exchange programmes with schools in France, Italy and Spain.
A key aspect of school life is our house system. All students are placed in one of the 7 houses, Banstead, Cauis, Morden, Saxie, Trappes, Thompson and Frankland and can earn House Points inside the classroom, through demonstrating our core competencies of being inquisitive, insightful, imaginative and independent. Students can also win points for their house through taking part in any of the competitions that run throughout the year. Student’s contribution to Co-Curricular life is also recognised through the colours system, the ultimate accolade, awarded for excellence in the arts, sport, or community contribution.
We firmly believe in offering students a range of opportunities to develop their leadership, team work and personal communication skills. This is achieved through the range of Co-Curricular activities as well as through opportunities to sit on the Academy parliament and by applying to become a junior or senior prefect.
